I/ OBJECTIVES:

1. Educational aim: To help Students will be able to develop such reading micro-skills as skimming for main ideas, ¬summarising main ideas, scanning for specific ideas, and guessing meaning in context.

Use the grammatical structure "It was not until . that .” and cinema vocabulary such as silent films, screen, and character and so on in order to read and talk about the topic.

2. Knowledge: reading micro-skills as skimming for main ideas, ¬summarising main ideas, scanning for specific ideas, and guessing meaning in context.

3. Skills: Read and talk about the topic

I/ OBJECTIVES:

T: Shows a picture of an actor and asks Sts some questions
PRE – READING (5’)
* Vocabulary:
- set sth in motion = make sth start moving
- existence (n) the state of existing
- spread (v) (Translation)
T: Asks Sts to work with a partner: Ask and answer the questions
T: Calls on some Sts to answer the questions in front of the class.
T: Reads the passage once.
T: Explains the meanings, pronunciation and uses of some new words.
WHILE READING
TASK 1: (10’)
* Suggested Answers:
+ cinema : film-making industry
+ sequence: series of related events or actions
+ decade: a period of ten years.
+ rapidly: quickly and in a short time.
+ scene: part of a film
+ character: a person in a film
TASK 2: (10’)
* Suggested Answers:
1. The history of cinema began in the early 19th century.
2. At that time scientists discovered that when sequences of still pictures were set in motion, they could give the feeling of movement.
3. No, they didn’t.
4. Audiences were able to see long films in the early 19th century.
5. The sound was introduced at the end of 1920s.
6. As the old silent films were being replaced by spoken ones, the musical cinema appeared.

T: Asks Sts to read the given definitions then look through the passage to find the word that can match with the definition.

POST READING (10’)
* Suggested Answers:
- 19th century: The History of Cinema
- 1905: five/ten minutes long; changes of scene and camera positions to tell a story, with actors playing characters parts.
- 1910s: first long films
- 1915: the cinema really became an industry 
- 1920s: the cinema changed completely. Sound was introduced. Silent films were replaced by spoken ones.
T: Asks Sts to work in groups: Talk about the passage, using the cues below.
T: Goes round to offer any help if necessary.
Homework 
T: Asks Sts to write a paragraph about the history of the cinema.( about 100 words)
